Strum Pattern:
Time Signature: 4/4

Option 1: Slow strumming - |D_UU|
(Explanation - 4 beats per meter; the stroke that is marked with a (') is played and muted (D' here); the beats in brackets are divided into subunits of equal duration as noted).

Option 2: Fast strumming - |(D_)(UD)|(DU)(DD)|

Option 3: Broken chords. Play the chords one string at a time at a rapid but constant pace where ever the chord is indicated; Or play an arpeggio of the sort:
4>3>2>1>1>2>3>4 or (root note)>3>2>1>1>2>3>(root note)

Playings Tips and Song Notes:
S D Burman's compositions are full of off-beat rhythms (I am speaking with respect to the time signature, e.g. 4/4 for this song - the song hits off on the 3rd of the 4 beats) and dissonant chords (E major and E minor side by side in this song). Between the meter chord changes occur and give this song its distinctive flavour.

His compositions have stood the test of time simply because these were not your average repetitive sugar coated C-G or C-F chord sequence. He composed very intuitively, articulating every note or chord to match the word of the song whose emotion it was to highlight. This song is one such fine example of his work. Try singing along or playing along with the track.

Plain Lyrics:
Na tum humen jaano; na hum tumhen jaanen -
Magar lagta hai kuchh aisa, mera humdum, mil gayaa...
Na tum humen jaano; na hum tumhen jaanen -
Magar lagta hai kuchh aisa, mera humdum, mil gayaa...

Yeh mausam yeh raat chup hai; wo honton ki baat chup hai.
Khamoshi sunane laagi, hai daastaan...
Yeh mausam yeh raat chup hai; wo honton ki baat chup hai.
Khamoshi sunane laagi, hai daastaan...
Nazar ban gai hai, dil ki zabaan...

Na tum humen jaano; na hum tumhen jaanen -
Magar lagta hai kuchh aisa, mera humdum, mil gayaa...

Mohabbat ke modh pe hum, mile sabako chhodh ke hum.
Dhadakate dilon ka leke, ye kaaravaan...
Mohabbat ke modh pe hum, mile sabako chhodh ke hum.
Dhadakate dilon ka leke, ye kaaravaan...
Chale aaj dono, jaane kahaan...

Na tum humen jaano; na hum tumhen jaanen -
Magar lagta hai kuchh aisa, mera humdum, mil gayaa...

SD hardly knew anything of chords. He had good knowledge of rhythm though. The entire arrangement of Baat ek raat ki (the film which you have mentioned) was by Pancham and Jaidev. Basu and Manohari were also there

Arindam Sarkarsaid...

RD did start composing from an early age, but from what I knew about this song is that was composed by SD only. As far as rhythm goes, I have always found SD more complex than most in this compositions.

Tune your guitar before you start playing.^Top^
